Stir the condensed milk, cocoa, butter and a small pinch of salt together in a heavy saucepan over medium-low heat.
Cook, stirring constantly and scraping the bottom, for 10β12 minutes until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the pan when you tilt it.
π‘ The classic test: drag the spatula across the bottom β if the trail holds for a second before closing, it's ready.
Scrape onto a buttered plate and cool to room temperature, then chill 30 minutes.
With buttered hands, roll teaspoons of the fudge into balls.
π‘ Re-butter your palms every few balls β sticky hands make sad brigadeiros.
Roll each ball through the chocolate sprinkles until fully coated and nest it in a little paper cup.
Serve at room temperature β or skip the rolling entirely and eat it soft with a spoon, 'de colher', as Brazilians often do.
Brigadeiros appeared in the 1940s, named for Brigadier Eduardo Gomes, whose presidential campaign supporters sold the sweets at rallies. The campaign was lost; the candy conquered the country. No Brazilian birthday party is legitimate without a tray of them, and licking the pot is a childhood rite.
