Boil split peas with pumpkin and carrot until collapsing, then blend smooth in the pot.
Add corn wheels, canned corn, coconut milk, thyme and the whole pepper.
Roll stiff little flour dumplings ('spinners') and drop them in.
Simmer 20 minutes until dumplings are cooked and the soup coats the ladle.
💡 It should be thick enough that a corn wheel doesn't sink.
Season hard, remove the pepper, and serve in cups, not bowls.
Corn soup is Trinidad's 3am institution — the pot that appears outside fetes and Carnival routes. Split peas ground to velvet, corn on the cob sawn into wheels, and flour dumplings: hangover insurance, one styrofoam cup at a time.
